Most people under-prepare, don't practice enough, and don't utilise the interview to sell themselves. They try to wing it, but this often backfires.

So here are my 5 top Job Interview tips to help you nail that interview.

Plan / prepare your responses:

You need to prepare for:

  • the introductory ‘tell us about yourself’ questions

  • any tricky questions

  • questions to ask them

  • the behavioural STAR questions, by coming up with at least 2 examples for each of the job selection criteria

  • Brainstorm and type up your responses.

Practice your responses:

Using your notes from the Planning stage, you need to practice your responses OUT LOUD. Do this by yourself, then record yourself on your computer, then get a friend to interview you. Get feedback, then practice again. The more practice, the better.

On the day:

Dress professionally for the interview (plan your outfit in advance) and research where you are going and who will be on the panel.

Having all this planned out will reduce nerves on the day.

And get plenty of sleep the night before and don’t drink too much coffee, which can increase anxiety.

Show enthusiasm:

Employers want to see that you're genuinely interested in the job and the company. Show enthusiasm by asking questions and expressing your interest (and excitement!) about the company and the role.

Treat the interview like a meeting, not an interrogation:

You want to work out if you want the job, so ask lots of questions and try to get a good understanding of the company culture. By asking lots of questions and approaching it with a meeting mindset, you'll hopefully reduce your nerves.
